Copenhagen, Denmark - Food and Drink

The little mermaid, a symbol of Denmark, was commissioned by Carlsberg Brewery magnate, Carl Jacobsen, in honor of Copenhagen's famous author Hans Christian Andersen.

The outdoor cafes featured some of their local cuisine. The Danes are best known for their open-face sandwiches (Smorrebrod), of which there are many tempting varieties. Typical of Scandinavia the "Cold Table", a buffet-style lunch is also very popular, consisting of many types of fish and seafood, particularly herring which may be pickled, marinated or fried, a range of cold meats and pates and even the odd 'hot' dish such as meatballs.

The Danes are famous for their beer, with over 50 different brands, the two most widely recognized brewers being Carlsberg and Tuborg. But there is still room for a Scottish pub such as this one.
